The importance of keeping up....

Modernity calls for instant information visually transmitted ‘anywhere- anytime’ (Boyd, 2006; Camm, 2009). Emerging markets exploit mobile phones similar to mini laptops, displaying WebPages, Global Positioning Devices, photographic material, music and game features. The Horizon Report (2009 and 2013) outlines tools available for increased personalised learning by 'pervasive wireless connections'.

NMC Horizon Report (2013) notes six technologies in the classroom to promote:

1. Cloud Computing as free for all

2. Mobile Learning (BYOD)

3. Learning Analytics - use of student data to target 'at-risk' students & customise

   curricula.

4. Open content - FOC online course materials

5. 3-D printing - students now learning as programs become simplified to

'illuminate the design process, build rapid prototypes, and create models that

demonstrate concepts in the curricula'.

6. Virtual and remote laboratories - 'hands-on' at fingertips.

If school libraries are to remain viable as a hub for information sourcing, then methods of delivering what users desire need to be on par with the technological world of participation and instant retrieval of information that generation ‘Y’ most readily access.  The professional development needs to be forthcoming and ongoing to keep up with the demanding changes and developments.
